Privacy policy

Last updated: 3 November 2026

This is my personal website. It sets no cookies and loads fonts, images and scripts from my own server in Germany. Everything described below runs on that server or with my hosting provider Hetzner. Nothing is passed to Google, social networks or other third parties.

Hosting

This website runs on a server of Hetzner Online GmbH, Industriestr. 25, 91710 Gunzenhausen, Germany, in a data centre in Germany. To deliver a page, the server processes technically necessary connection data such as your IP address, the date and time of the request, the requested page, the referring page and information about your browser and operating system. The web server keeps no log of page views. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in delivering this website securely and reliably (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Contact form

If you send me a message through the contact form, your name, email address, phone number (optional) and message travel over an encrypted connection to a form service I run on the same server. It sends them as an email through Hetzner's mail server to my mailbox, which is also hosted by Hetzner in Germany. The form service keeps no database of messages and does not log your IP address; it only holds it in memory for at most two minutes to limit how many messages can be sent. I use your details only to answer your message and delete them once your request is settled, unless the law requires me to keep them. The legal basis is the consent you give with the checkbox (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time with effect for the future. For enquiries about a job or a project, Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR applies as well.

Your theme choice

If you switch between the light and the dark theme, your browser saves this choice in its local storage (theme-preference) so the website keeps it on your next visit. The value never leaves your browser, and you can delete it in your browser settings at any time. Storing it is strictly necessary for the function you asked for (Section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG).

Analytics with Umami

To see which pages are read, I use the open-source software Umami. It runs on my own server in Germany, sets no cookies and creates no profiles across websites. It records the page viewed with its title and time, the referring page, browser, operating system, device type, screen size, language and the approximate location (country, region, city). From your IP address and browser details Umami computes an ID that changes every month, so repeat visits within a month count once. Your IP address itself is processed only briefly and is not stored. The analytics data is deleted automatically 24 months after it was collected. The legal basis is my legitimate interest in a privacy-friendly evaluation and improvement of this website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Links to other websites

Links to GitHub, LinkedIn, X, Twitch and other websites are plain links. Data only reaches these services when you click a link, and from then on their own privacy policies apply.

Your rights

You have the right to access your data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict its processing, to data portability and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 15 to 18, 20 and 21 GDPR). You can withdraw your consent at any time (Art. 7(3) GDPR). Just send me a message through the contact form or write to the address above. You can also complain to a data protection supervisory authority, for example the one responsible for me: Der Hessische Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit, Gustav-Stresemann-Ring 1, 65189 Wiesbaden, Germany.
